On Tuesday night at Red Mountain Spa I took a pottery class with three other guests. The class was at the Zia Pottery Studio in Kayena's Coyote Gulch Art Village. The studio is actually an co-op where several artists working with ceramics throw pots and use the giant kiln out back. They also have weekly classes at various levels.
After teaching myself knitting and crochet, I know that in order to get anywhere with a new craft or art form you have to be willing to really suck at it first. My mom still has the hot plate mats I made when I started crocheting in 2001 and they're all lopsided but she still uses them anyway! But it only took me a few more projects to hit my stride and make even stitches.
So, I was perfectly happy with what I made in pottery class, even though two of the items are as lopsided and loopy looking as my first hot plate mats. But I had a blast and didn't mind walking out of there with clay splattered on my jeans and a sense of accomplishment in my heart.
The teacher, Joe Viers, was very patient and his passion for the art form was inspiring. All four of us were very proud of our work. Click here to see photos of what we made and look at some of the items that were for sale in the studio.
