Okay, judging by the "dear friend" I was probably one of a number of folks who wrote to Mayor B to find out what the city was doing to honor all the heroes involved in the emergency landing of U.S. Airways Flight 1549 earlier this month. I was, however, probably one of the only ones who said "please do something special for them, even if it means raising my taxes. Just put it on my tab."
Here's what he wrote back:
Dear Friend:
Thank you for writing about U.S. Airways Flight 1549.
When Captain Sullenberger made an incredibly skillful emergency landing on the Hudson River, New Yorkers and area residents wasted no time in coming to the aid of the plane's passengers. Our Finest and Bravest, workers from the Office of Emergency Management, the Port Authority Police, the U.S. Coast Guard, ferry crews from New York Waterway and Circle Line, EMTs, and everyday citizens made split-second decisions that resulted in the dramatic rescue. Because of their efforts-and the calm, steady leadership shown by the captain and his crew-all 155 passengers made it to safety. To honor their impressive work, we invited our rescue workers to a ceremony at City Hall the following morning, and I presented each of them with Certificates of Honor in recognition of their heroism. In addition, as soon as we can get them all back in New York, I look forward to presenting the Key to the City to the entire crew of Flight 1549.
This event reminds all New Yorkers of the indomitable spirit of our City-and proved once again that we can face any challenge and overcome any obstacle by working together. It is another example of why I'm so proud to be a New Yorker. Thank you again for taking the time to share your support of all those involved in the extraordinary rescue.
All the best.
Sincerely,
Michael R. Bloomberg
Mayor
