Opera fans will be happy to know that the scandalous rivalry between ice skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan -- which resulted in Kerrigan getting whacked on the knee with a crowbar by a chubby associate of Harding's boyfriend -- is now being immortalized in an opera.
Go ahead, reread that. It won't change things.
Nancy and Tonya: The Opera will be performed at Tufts University this spring. Elizabeth Searle, who wrote the libretto of the one act opera, explained to ABC News that the tale of the trash-talking, beer-swilling Harding's insane jealousy of America's sweetheart Kerrigan is a universal one."Girls in America are either raised to be Tonyas or Nancys," said Searle. "I think any girl can relate to these two women and what they went through."
For those of you that can't wait to relive the thrill of watching Kerrigan shrieking in pain "Why me?" check out this a hilarious pop quiz about Tonya from 1995 that I found in the Washington Post archives.
I also found this quote from one of my very favorite athletes, Sir Charles Barkley:
My initial response was to sue her for defamation of character, but then I realized that I had no character. ~ Charles Barkley, on hearing Tonya Harding proclaim herself "the Charles Barkley of figure skating", 1994
