I just got back from a Family Services training class at the Red Cross here in New York. It's a one day class on how to do an intake interview with a client who has come to the American Red Cross for help. It was a great class and I learned a lot. The work that I did on the phones for ARC during Hurricanes Katrina, Wilma, and Rita definitely came in handy.
As what may become the first named tropical storm of the summer brews in the Caribbean, it's time to start thinking about volunteering with the Red Cross. If you're interested, call your local chapter, or go on the redcross.org web site for more information.
In New York we need to recruit 5,000 Disaster Services volunteers. Our chapter services about ten million people, so if there were a major disaster here we would have to mobilize a lot of people to set up enough shelters and provide services.
Being a volunteer doesn't mean that you have to be deployed outside of your local area and the time commitment isn't huge. There are plenty of different things to do to match your skills and schedule.
Please consider being a volunteer!!!
