It's been, like, 90+ degrees in New York City and I'm sure that the closest most people got to an appliance this weekend was standing in front of the open refrigerator in their underwear.
Except me.
That's because I have a new toy that I can't keep my hands off of: my brand new 30 inch Kenmore Elite Gas Convection Range.
I'm having so much fun that my microwave is starting to get jealous. It's the perfect geek appliance -- lots of programmable stuff and bells and whistles. Yes, I do read the manual (I always do, like the chick in the CDW commercial). For example, you can time your baking, so you can set the oven like a microwave (e.g. 45 minutes at 350 degrees) and it will shut off at that time. There's a pre-heat button and when the oven reaches the target temperature it beeps (and keeps beeping until you press the clear button.) There's a bunch of other stuff I haven't played with yet, like the convection recipe converter that let's you enter the temp and time of your conventional recipe and it converts it to convection.
The broiler is actually at the top of the oven -- so you don't have to crouch down on the floor when you broil something. The drawer at the bottom is a warming drawer.
I should note at this point that another novelty for me is that I finally have enough kitchen cabinet space that I no longer have to store my baking pans in the oven when I'm not using it!
The range has got five burners - three regular burners that together make up an oval shaped "bridge burner," plus a power burner for boiling up stuff real fast (like a gigondo pot of water for pasta), and a simmer burner which is a burner with a super low flame for gentle cooking. It's self-cleaning and it's got a glass cooktop which is also easy to clean.
I think I've used this range more in three weeks than I did for 6 months with my old oven. You see, when you live in rented apartments for years and years you never get to choose your own appliances.
So, with the help of my (also new) Kitchen-Aid stand mixer I baked up a batch of brownies that took 45 minutes from prep, to bake, to clean-up. I had so much fun that I didn't even mind the heat!
Next up, I'm going to try cooking something in the convection oven and test out the cooktop grill.
